That is one of the main problems with self-reporting. Now, if you could get funding for a sample size of about 100 subjects and conduct PET scans on them while subjecting them to stimuli, that would test your hypothesis. Try Homeland Security and call it "less than torture dynamic inter-modal interrogation techniques." They would not only throw money (and possibly hookers)at you but would most probably supply the unfortunate victims...um...voluntary test subjects.
